I did this part on my blog, Endless war. In it, i listed two freeware screencap programs:

I have discovered two freeware tools ideal for those who want to do screencaps on video files. Firstly there is imagegrab, available at:

http://paul.glagla.free.fr/

This does screencaps into BMP and JPEG, it can do automatic screencaps per second, minute and frame. It supports AVI,WMV amoungst a few other video formats, plus VCD,SVCD and live stream support.

Trouble is, it doesn't support DivX and Xvid codecs and possibly any other third-party codec, only Directshow codecs are know to fully work. Also, there is a possibility that it won't work on a Win2000XP accout which has limited user access. I have tried it on Win98 and it works but on Win2000 with my account as limited user it crashed.

The other tool is Image grabber II, avalibe at:

http://www45.brinkster.com/antworkz/

The site is not up at the moment, but you can download the programs from there.

This screencap program supports DivX and XVid as well as the formats ImageGrab can do. But it can only do automatic screencaps by frame (not seconds or minutes). Also, it doesn't have a friendly interface as Imagegrab (Though it is easy to use once you get the hang of it) and it a tendency to produce memory leaks from overuse of the program to general memory leaks with Windows. Causing you to restart the computer after repeated use of the program.

Overall both tools work in their own regard, I would prefer Imagegrab but Image Grabber II (Confusing, isn't it?) would be better for those with third-party codecs. They are both small anyway so it would be best to have both on the system.

That's good software, thanks.

Well...I didn't check movie capture software. But when I capture my windows screen, I use freeware which is called 'Capture STAFF'.
It can capture some application's screen rapidly. However it can't capture movie shot through media player.
And I don't know whether this software support English...

The tools i have stated are standalone, they have their own player to allow manual capping. Its the codecs that matter though.

Also a normal screenshot only captures a static picture. Screencap tools (amongst others) extract the relative frame and save it to disk or memory.

The Best Screencap Tool I've Seen is the VLC Media Player that NesMaster Recomended, Altough it saves the Screenshots on .PNG Format, but, thats no problem, I just change the format to .JPG and DONE! Easy, Don't you think?

The problem with BS Player is that the colors of the caps come out looking flat. Colors are more vibrant and more contrated with VLC, so they look better most of the time.

I found that VLC Player can play DVD without any DVD player or plugin.
This means we can see DVD on non-cost!

I also found that VLC Player also can change Output Module.
Generally, when you capture some screenshots of DVD, you will fail in using some capture software.(It need to use player's capture function.)
However when I change Output Module to 'OpenGL' in VLC, it can capture the screenshots using capture software.
So I could capture DVD screenshots in rapidly without spending time.
