Actually, prisions could probably be made self sufficient, growing crops and manufacturing goods and so forth. The government could probably make a lot of money off of them in the process (the whole "paying your debt to society" thing). The problem is that big businesses have filed lawsuits to keep that from happening.
The reason I'm not in favor of the death penalty is that once you do it, you can't take it back. I think if we're going to have a death penalty, we should make it so that the prisioner gets to choose ("OK, you can stay locked up for the rest of your life, or you can be put to death. Your call. Life? Ok. Let us know if you change your mind. Enjoy your cell.")
