I think Serial Experiments Lain got a fair amount of attention when it came out. After all, the style it used has been emulated in shows like Paranoia Agent.

I am quite pleased to see that a film by Makoto Shinkai made it into your list. (The Place Promised in Our Early Days). All of his works are wonderful.
