Yeah, I think so. I think Belldandy and Keiichi are a bit too...I guess you can't call it normal, but they aren't silly enough to call their kids that. But as I said, Hercules wouldn't be so bad. It's just so obviously European that I doubt it.

Something I read in a newsletter from an american living in Japan, about his children:
If they were born in japan thier names would have to be derived from a government approved list of names, usually two characters from a list of a little over 2200 kanji.

I reckon if that guy is unlucky enough, the 2 words will made out to be undesirable..... :)

Apparently the approved list of kanji was put in place to help avoid confusion when trying to pronounce peoples names. There are around 50,000 kanji and the standard for literacy in japan is "only" 10,000. That leaves a large number of obscure kanji that parents could inflict thier childern with, kanji which most people wouldn't understand. Still, combining 2 0f 2200 kanji results in over 4,800,000 possible combinations.... for argument's sake say half of the combinations are unlucky, too weird, or in some way undesirable, that's over two million names.. can you think of that many different names in your language?

a long (but by no means complete) list of japanese names spelled in romanji can be found here:

That's terribly complicated, but not so bad anyway. Pretty cool. And you're right, I can't think of two million names in my language. I'm not sure if there are that much originally dutch names, actually. Oh well.
