Hmm...odd, I can't recall any anime character calling their father -kun, because almost no anime character has a father! :P, so I cant answer the question...

Interesting thread...however, if you try tacking on -kun or -chan, etc to the end of a friend's name while speaking to them casually in America, you'd probably look sort of weird...trust me, I've tried it.

i have always thought you refer to your father as "oto-sama" not something-kun

When speaking about your own pa, you can use chichi, about others use otousan. When speaking to him directly it's usual to call him tousan. (I'm just using Japanese words here, not those they've adopted from foreign languages).

maybe i to should enrol on a course to learn to speak japanese. that way i can fully understand all the animes and CDs i have, plus it'll be a great help when trying to get a japanese girlfriend!

Actually, you can order a shirt online that says (in Kanji), "I'm looking for a Japanese girlfriend."

As for anime characters not having fathers, that isn't true... Tenchi Masaki comes to mind, as does Ranma Saotome.

(not sure of the correct spelling)

hahowey/kaza means mother
chechuwey/doza means father

thats what the japanese address their parents as. just a note megami-sama means goddess and kami-sams means god ;)
