hey all, I'm almost a complete newbie to the magna/anime shows. I've only been exposed to the VERY mainstream shows over the past few years (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ah My Goddess, etc), and I love them!

Because I'm not very familiar with the anime/magna scene, what are the other "good" anime shows out there are, that I should check out? What I'm really looking for is what other anime/manga TV shows you guys are into - we already share our love of AMG in common, so you guys obviously have good taste. :)

love AMG!!!! :)

Yeah, let us know what sparks your interest. Do you like action? Mecha? Love stories? What have you seen? If we have this info we can easily come up with something for you. Plus, I'm the president of my school's anime club, so I've seen a lot of things, and know a lot of shows. ^_^ Anyway, welcome aboard! Hope you enjoy your time here.

aside from AMG & Avatar, I also liked Digimon (the first season) - some the more recent digimon seasons looked interesting, but I haven't had the time to look into them. The sypnosis for You're Under Arrest, El Hazard, and Claymore all look very intriguing, I'll check them out.

I do like action, high technology, and supernatural/magic stuff. Romance/love is also good (i.e., AMG).
I also loved the recent movie "Appleseed", inre to the Mecha category.

What is the typical availability of some of these shows? I imagine many of them aren't mainstream enough to be available on online rental sites like Blockbuster or Netflix - are some of them only able to be [bought] from speciality sites, or downloaded from torrents? I've used Isohunt in the past for my torrent needs (I only download, to backup things I already own, of course). ;)

thanks for the help!

I would strongly, strongly recommend the first season of Full Metal Panic. Awesome cross between a serious action thriller and a light hearted screwball comedy. Also seems surprisingly real for a series that involves mecha and has 'socially inept teenage super soldier is assigned to protect short tempered high school girl without her knowledge or permission' as the main plot.

If you're okay with comedy, I'd also recommend the superb School Rumble. It takes a little while to really get into gear, but it's awesome once it does. There are a lot of high school comedies out there, but that one stands out.

It might be useful to know what sort of content level you're okay with watching. Some shows are good, but not necessarily suitable for all viewers. Blood+, for instance, is a quite good show (although it's somewhat weak in the later parts compared to the early ones) with good story and characterisation... but when it decides to do action scenes, it lives up to its name.

As for the availability of previously mentioned shows, YUA Season One and at least some of El Hazard have been released over here (though YUA Season 2 hasn't been), but as far as I know the anime version of Claymore has not been. Also, Claymore is another show that is definitely not for those who are really squeamish about blood.

Okay, sooo~~~ based off of what you've said, you are pretty open to most shows. Now for another question: maturity level? Are you against nudity, or blood, or violence? With that asked here are some of my own recommendations.

Love Comedy:
School Rumble
Love Hina
Maburaho
Ai Yori Aoshi
Chobits

Action: (Most of these series are for more mature audiences.)
Claymore
Hellsing
Berserk

Mystery:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

Mecha:
After War - Gundam X
Gundam Wing
Innocent Venus
Gravion, Gravion Zwei (If you're really into fan service.)

Sci-Fi:
Ergo Proxy
Elfen Lied (Very bloody, contains nudity, but very good. Meant for mature audiences.)
Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence (Movies that inspired The Matrix)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, 2nd GIG, Solid State Society (TV Series Seasons 1, 2, and Movie)
Last Exile

Absolutely Terrible:
Shining Tears X Wind (If your idea of fun is a rapid degeneration of your mental state, feel free to watch. If not, avoid at all costs.)

So here's a list of my recommendations. Pick and choose as you like. I have a lot more that I can suggest if you would like. (I have over $2000 in anime series, and manga, and the collection is still growing, and have about 90+ series that I've seen and own.) Hope these help! Enjoy!
