I have yet to see the movie, but I have read the book. It is incredible! the dialogue, the writting skills is incredible and will draw you in and trap you in an instance as a good book should. This is one of those rare books that actualy had time and effort put into it to make it appealing and captivating, not a single word was written down by mystake, every single one carried an important meaning. For a time, I thought the story was true, it was not tell i took a peak at the 'acknowledgment' page in the back that i found out the main character, Sayuri, was a figment of his imagination. In a sense she was based on a true Geisha the author interviewed (who's name currently escapes me).

plz PLZ read the book, you will not regret it, it is a beautiful glimpse into the japanese culture, and the life of a Geisha.

For those who do not know what it is about, it fallows the life of a young girl who will become Sayuri, a Geisha set out into life to entertain in order to repay the debts accumulated in her life. It is full of drama and romance, it is funny, chilling, sad, compelling.

haven't seen the movie.... the book is on my shelf, waiting for me to read it a third time. Not sure i want to see the movie, movies so rarely do a good book justice.

Though it's true that movies hardly do a book justice, i think this is one of the best that i've seen in that regarde. TRUE it is hard to pack in all of the thoughts and emotions that lie behind the characters in a couple of hours of film, but this follows as true as it can. People who have not read the book may get confused because the movie doesn't take time to explain everything (like what na Okiya is, and who exactly people are and what their rolls are, they leave that to you. You won't know that one lady is mother and one is aunty unless you read it).

unfortunatly this ^ meant that people who just go and see movies without reading first get confused and the movie gets poor reviews in the paper and everyone says "oh i heard that was bad"... POOP! the movie's awesome! read the book and see the movie!!! (it's so pretty! i wish i had a kimono)

I look forward to see it, judging from clips the music and insturmentals sound amazing :) and I saw pictures of the scenery which were breath taking!

It somewhat reminded me of the movie called 'Water' it is incredible and heart wrenching. It is about a yound Indian girl named Chiyou, she is married and a young age (around 5) however her husband dies when she is 7 or 8. The law in India states a woman can never remarry, she is doomed to become a prostitute/begger in order to make a living. The movie utilizes the water elements beautiful. Due to religous/political debates the movie took 5 whole years to make because terrorists where attemting to burn the movie set and destroy the footage because they did not want india 'misrepresented' AKA they didn't want people to know the trueth of the abuse of woman-disguiesed as religeon. I would recomend anyone to see it (preferable 15+ age) it is incredible and it will touch your soul.

Havn't seen it, but i did see a trialer of it and i thoght it looked good. Untill i heard from Radio Five Live's Film review that it doesn't contain Japanesse actors or actresses. Now hang on a minite here, it is supposed to be set in Japan, it is based on Geishas and yet it contians not one single Japanesse actoractress!? Thats like taking a Japanesse game and making a american film adapation (hang on, thats already being done, it is called D.O.A and it will stink). So, not quite sure to be honest, it ameicanising again.

I read the book written by the geisha Mineko Iwasaki...it is called My life as a Geisha...
I think it is better than the other version...she tells her story, without drama and fantasy...it is a great book!
I want to see the film, but I still don´t have time T-T
