I think Japanese 5.1 has something to do with surround sound. On English DVDs I sometimes see English 5.1.

5.1 is a form of surround sound, which is the sound effect you get in cinemas. this is achieved by the use of multiple speakers placed in strategic positions around the viewer. Therefore to be able to enjoy surround sound you would need a surround system. Usually it would comprise of a front speaker where teh TV is, two side speakers beside the TV and various satellite speakers around teh viewing room.
the actual surround sound effect is best explained with an example:

Say ur watching Keiichi and Belldandy riding on the BMW motorcycle and they move from the right of the screen towards the left. then teh sound of bike will follow the movement ie the speakers will emit the sound from right to left, to make it sound like teh bike is really moving from one end of the screen to the other.

yep thats the idea! the whole aim of surround sound is to make the sounds more realistic to immerse you into the experience.

Thanks for the info. Guess it doesn't have any effect for me since I don't have a surround system.

Walmart carries some very affordable surround sound systems (for me though, if it isn't Sony, fuhgedaboudit). It is a whole different experience.

Digital 5.1 is the best standart sound that you can find in dvds, if you have a 6 speaker system (5 speakers + subwoofer) you can hear a great sound. If your tv doesnt support 5.1 or you dont have 5.1 speaker system connected to it then its better to select the normal track (2.0 or normal stereo)

It is the bigger speaker that produces most of the bass (the rumble of thunder, sounds like that). Since the human ear isn't good at determining where sounds at that frequency come from, people typically put that one on the floor or behind something so it can't be seen.

yes thats right, OR subwoofers are little puppy dogs taken aboard submarines to bark at strangers! LOL

Hikaryu, you're from Malaysia, so am i safe to assume that surround systems are quite rare over there? or have you moved on to a more advanced system and 5.1 is now an old relic! ^^
just though i'd bring this up in case future posters take your position for granted. arent i nice! ^^

Well, I'm not really sure... but each PC in my school has a subwoofer! Why do they need subwoofers for education?
