As the nemesis of the Goddesses, Mara is the cause of most of the conflict in Ah! My Goddess, particularly in the early part of the series. When she was unleashed from her Demonic CD by Tamiya and Otaki, she made it her sole duty to seal the Goddesses, make Keiichi miserable, and increase the Demon "share" of Earth. Towards these goals, she has tried many methods, mostly resorting to lesser demons and magical artifacts. Although, some of these attempts were quite successful initially, they are always thwarted by the Goddesses. The main defenses the employed against her are Ban-pei (who was designed to defend the Temple from her), and the exploitation of her weaknesses, Good Luck Charms, and Rock n' Roll Music.

Overview
Mara was the first demon to be introduced in the series. Tasked to be the Goddesses' chief antagonist, Mara is the omnipresent thorn on their side. Her favorite point of attack is the couple Belldandy and Keiichi, in the hopes that if they broke up, Belldandy would go back to Heaven. However being outnumbered 3 to 1, Mara dislikes going toe to toe with the Goddesses. Instead she uses various servants such as Senbei, the Ninja Masters, the Demon Boosters (later became Sudaru), and even humans such as Sayoko to carry out her plans.
Many chapters in the early part of the series were devoted to Mara's exploits. However she becomes noticeably less prominent as the series progresses, especially with the introduction of the new demons Welsper and Hild. With the latter's appearance, Mara resurfaces not as the main antagonist but as Hild's right hand man. The trend continues to the present with the Goddesses receiving much attention from the daimakaicho herself.[less]
